UFC 104: Machida defeats Shogun – Unanimous Decision
A UFC card that will be talked about for whiles to come wrapped up at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Lightheavy weight champion Lyoto Machida retained his championship belt in a controversial unanimous judge’s decision, after going five rounds with former Pride grand prix champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. In this five-five minute round championship match Shogun was able to control Machida like no other opponent has been able to do since his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championships, attacking the legs and body of the champ. Machida answered back with kicks of his own and defended the takedown attempts of the challenger.
At the end of the twenty-five minute match Machida was awarded the victory, a very vocal crowd booed as the results were revealed and Machida as the champion was questioned by Joe Rogan,. A visibly upset Shogun was cheered for by the crowd as he stated that he and his corner thought he had won the fight but accepted the judge’s decision.
UFC 104: Main Card Results
In the number one contendership match for the Heavyweight title; Cain Velasquez walked away with the second round TKO victory over Ben Rothwell, dominating the UFC newcomer from the start of the match, Velasquez kept the fight on the ground, where we saw a repeat of his last performance against Cheick Kongo as he applied the ground and pound to Rothwell.
The second round resembled the first with Velasquez taking it to the ground punishing Rothwell some more, Rothwell made it to the cage and began to make his way up, on his way up Velasquez got the opening and unloads on Rothwell the ref steps in and calls the fight. Rothwell objects. Cain Velasquez will meet the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin for the Heavyweight title.
Gleison Tibau won his catcheight bout with the decision victory over Josh Neer. Tibau took Neer down easily with big take downs throughout the match, in the end walking away with the unanimous decision victory over Josh Neer.
In a quick bout Anthony Johnson secured his victory over Yoshiyuki Yoshida with a :41 knock out in the first round, a knock out that was sure to give him KO of the night if he had not missed weight..
Spencer Fisher was stopped by Joe ‘Daddy” Stevenson via TKO of the first round. Stevenson opened up Fisher over right eye in the fight and dominated him on the ground. The fight was called when Stevenson got side control and locked down Fisher and delivered huge elbows to the defenseless fighter.
UFC 104: The Undercard Recap
Pat Barry had an impressive match against Antoni Hardonk, stopping the heavyweight giant via TKO of the second round. Chael Sonnen defeated Yushin Okami and Ryan Bader overcame Eric Schafer both winning by unanimous judge’s decision. Stefan Struve submitted Chase Gormley in the first round with a triangle choke and Jorge Rivera stopped Ron Kimmons with a third round TKO. A Split decision ended the Kyle Kingsbury vs. Razak Al-Hassan bout, with Kingsbury taking the victory
